Eight hundred years ago, this was a land ruled by kings. Seen as a cradle for the tribal kingdoms that would stretch across Africa – this corner of South Africa gave birth to a thriving community long before Europeans set foot on the continent. But why did a highly functional society suddenly disappear, abandoning an area that would never be occupied again? And what can this exodus tell us about Africa’s past, as well as its future?
