FENCING IN SOUTH AFRICA
It’s been described as physical chess, a sport which relies on the use of skills, tactics and strategy. As a preparation for armed combat, fencing is as old as the sword itself, and today the modern adaption of this ancient sport is played in 145 countries. In Africa, the popularity of the sport has challenged a new generation of fighters. This is the sport of fencing. The modern-day fencer is skilled in the use of three different weapons – foil, épée and sabre. These sporting weapons are lightweight, flexible and without sharp points or edges. But in the right hands they are dangerously effective.
